Description
Ximending is one of the busiest areas of Taipei. This drawing was born out of a few reasons: Ximen has a long history and has been a pretty important commercial center throughout many eras. This means it has some impressive Japanese era architecture, but also a lot of really unique buildings from the mid-20th century boom times. Some of those, like Wannian, the former China Times Building, Heroes Tower, and the Bo'ai Building, are slowly becoming design classics. There are also some more secretive sites that are missed by many people, like the large Mazu Temple hidden behind shophouses, and the elegant former Women's Association Building. I've loved finding these places and have long wanted to record them.
My evening social life has been pretty Ximending focused for most of my time here. From Red Square, to Studio 9, to smaller bars in the alleys, there are some pretty good memories here. Many of these places have outdoor areas which I've drawn on. Ximen is a vibrant colorful place and so I've added a fair bit more color than I usually do. A lot of buildings are covered in billboards and I also added the crowds, street performers, markets, and lots of little details that bring the area to life.
